Hello Fabulous Fourth Families,
This will be our grand finale newsletter! We can’t believe the year has flown by so quickly.
This week we studied Art to the Core and Core Knowledge Poetry. The students examined art from several different countries and many different time periods. Additionally, we read poetry and found that poets write history, biographies, nonsense, dreams and big ideas. Students also had an opportunity to write their own poetry.
In math we continued reviewing all concepts from fourth grade. We had visitors from the Pre Algebra class come and test us on our current concepts but many also learned exponents through this lesson. Today, we got together with third grade and had fun playing math games that tied into both of our standards.
Remember Monday is a holiday and Tuesday is field day. Please make sure your child comes in tennis shoes on Tuesday so they can fully enjoy the day. On Tuesday we will also watch Pollyanna. Yearbooks will be handed out on Wednesday and Thursday is a minimum day.
As we close this year, we want to let you know what a special place this group of students has in our hearts. We have truly enjoyed working with all sixty students everyday this year.
We hope you have a wonderful three day weekend!

Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
We had fun last week having our “celebrations” each morning before STAR testing. Thank you so much for your support and sending the healthy snacks each morning.
Next week, we will not be having Language Arts groups or Literature Groups. Groups will continue the following week with our normal schedule. We will be preparing our classroom for Open House/Core Knowledge Showcase on Thursday night. Students have been working so hard on many projects in class. Your children are anxious to share their wonderful work with their families.
Next week in Language Arts, we will be practicing writing with strong, descriptive sentences in many genres. We will also continue identifying all parts of speech and diagramming sentences.
In math, Mrs. Regan’s class will be working on Unit 19, Symmetry and Congruency. Mrs. Reno’s class will be spiraling back and reviewing past lessons. Both classes will be having fun practicing math facts.
Our unit on American Revolution is concluding and students will take their test next. Tuesday. We will roll right into our unit on the Constitution and learning about the Early Presidents. Students are excited to begin our science unit on Human Bodies. The first portion of this unit is learning about the Circulatory System. Following this will be the respiratory system and effects smoking has on the lungs.
Please remember that Monday and Thursday are both minimum days.

Dear Fabulous Families,
This week we have spent a great deal of time reviewing all previous learned skills. The students have been practicing addition, multiplication, algebra and geometry in math. In Language Arts we have been reviewing all parts of speech, comprehension, figurative language and making inferences. We also provided a large block of time for rough draft writing of the biography project. Most students made great progress on this project and now will need to finish at home. Remember, the project is not due until May 2nd which is still two full weeks away.
The week after Spring Break will be STAR testing beginning on Tuesday April 26th. The entire fourth grade will begin the test promptly at 8:30 and will finish somewhere before 10:30. Unfortunately, if your child arrives after 8:30 during testing they will not be permitted in the classroom. Once the students start the test we are not allowed to let students in or leave the testing area until the test is completed. Please keep this in mind as you schedule appointments for that week.
There will be no spelling or vocabulary for the week of April 25th.
At the bottom of the page is the Open House/Core Knowledge schedule for the fourth grade. The students look forward to sharing their wonderful work with their families.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
This week flew by so fast! It’s hard to believe that it’s April already. Please remember that Monday is a mini day and school is out at 11:55.
This week we took our first American Revolution assessment. Next week, we will continue learning all about this important time in history. This unit will resume after Spring Break.
Next week, we will spend a lot of time reviewing all lessons learned in Math and English in preparation for the upcoming STAR tests. We will also continue writing and focusing on Narrative Analysis in reading comprehension. On Thursday, students will be given class time to write their rough draft of their Biography Report. Please make sure your child's research is complete before Thursday and they bring all of their materials to school. A rough draft and final draft are required for this report.
In Literature Groups, we continue identifying and diagramming the plot of our books. We also will have prompted discussions in our groups encouraging higher levels of thinking.
Next week is Earth Week. Students will be decorating their doors with recycled materials, wearing green on Wednesday to support “going green”, and having discussions on what Earth Week is all about.
Parents, please feel free to volunteer in the classrooms. We love parent participation and could use more assistance in our Language Arts Groups and Literature Groups. Thank you to those parents who come in and volunteer already!

Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
We enjoyed another week in fourth grade. (and the wonderful weather) Students worked diligently in math this week. These last few units are tricky! Mrs. Reno’s class has completed unit 20 and will begin spiraling back to all previous lessons. Mrs. Regan’s class will test out of Unit 18 on Tuesday and will also be spiraling all previous lessons.
In Social Studies, both classes learned about the foundation of the American Revolution. The first assessment will be at the end of next week and will cover lessons 1-10.
In English, students learned all about adverbs and prepositions. The following link is packed with effective and fun games for grammar and other subjects: http://www.elcerritowire.com/4/grammar.htm Please have your child play these games and practice learned skills from home. They are a lot of fun!
Parents, if you still need to fulfill your volunteer hours requirement, we are always looking for parents to assist in Literature Groups and Language Arts Groups. This is a fun way to earn those hours!

Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
In Language Arts we concluded our unit on Pronouns and will begin our Adverbs and Prepositions. We will also continue writing in all four genres. Next week, watch for our American Revolution Biography research project directions. Some portions of this project will be completed in class and teachers will give guidance to the students. Most portions of this project will be compiled at home. This project aligns with our new unit on the American Revolution which begins next Tuesday. Our unit on Ancient Chinese Dynasties will be assessed on Tuesday as well.
In math, Mrs. Reno’s class is working on unit 18, which is working on equations on graphs. Mrs. Regan’s class is finishing unit 16 which is interpreting data and graphs. We continue practicing our math facts.
Our CI goal is coming along nicely. As a reminder, it is multiplying multiple numbers. We will finish our goal next week and will begin a new goal the following week. We are excited to reach our goal!
The Science Fair was a huge success! The project boards were wonderful. Thank you to our parents for your donations of paper goods and for working hours at the fundraiser snack bar. What a fun way to earn volunteer hours! Thank you to our room parents for organizing the transport of the project boards and organizing the fourth grade participation at the snack bar. Fabulous job! Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
Wow! we can’t believe we are beginning our third trimester already! What a fabulous year so far. The Science Fair boards look absolutely wonderful. We are looking forward to our Science Fair tonight at WSCA. Thank you volunteers for representing the fourth grade at our fundraiser snack bar tonight at the fair. Thank you also for all of your paper good donations. Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
In Language Arts, we worked hard learning all about Pronouns and continuing our writing in all genres. Mrs. Reno's class will be taking their Pronoun assessment on Tuesday. During our Enrichment block, we focused on comprehension for both fiction and non fiction, and cause/effect. In math, Mrs. Reno’s class is finishing up unit 17 which is Length and Coordinates. The test for this unit will be Tuesday. Mrs. Regan’s class concluded unit 15 and has started unit 16, which is Statistics. Both classes are doing well on our current CI goal, multiplication with multiple numbers. Ancient Chinese Dynasties are very interesting and we have enjoyed learning about many emperors, dynasties, Marco Polo, and the Mongols. Our assessment for this unit will be next week.
Please remember that all next week is minimum days due to spring conferences. There will be no music or PE next week.
Thank you and enjoy your weekend,

Hello Fabulous Families!
It seems like we just had winter break and here we are ready to have yet another break. The students have worked hard and deserve a week off!
This week in math, Mrs. Regan’s class finished unit 14 on integers. Mrs. Reno’s class finished unit 15 on measurement and geometry. We continue to spiral many topics into math to keep practicing the concepts. We daily, multiply, divide and work on algebraic equations.
In Language Arts this week, we reviewed many of our old units. In enrichment many of the students went on a quotation mark hunt while others were practicing with irregular verbs and combining sentences. We also practiced writing our summaries this week. When we return we will be taking the state writing test on Tuesday March 1st. If your child is sick on March 1st they will take the test on the 2nd. If your student is sick that day they will not take the state writing test.
In science, we finished our unit on electricity and test scores are making their way home. Ask your student how they did on the test! When we return we will begin studying the Ancient Chinese Dynasties.
We are nearing the end of trimester two and there are some students who still need to retake social studies or science tests. Ask your student if they have retaken all the tests they can and encourage them to do so. The last day for retakes, for the second trimester, will be Thursday March 3rd.
Is your student interested in earning a homework pass? Over the break they may do so by completing one of the writing assignments that we have provided. This is completely optional!
Remember that the science fair is March 11th. We hope that everyone is diligently working on their projects.
Have a fabulous week off with your kids!

Hello Wonderful Families,
We had such a wonderful field trip today. Thank you to everyone who was able to volunteer on the trip. Thank you also to the many who wanted to come but understood that we were limited.
This week we had fun learning all about electricity and types of circuits. Ask your child if they remember what a conductor and insulator is? Today’s field trip tied in perfectly with our Core Knowledge unit on electricity and meteorology.
In math this week Mrs. Regan’s group ended unit 13 and started unit 14 which is integers. In Mrs. Reno’s class we ended unit 14 and began working on unit 15 which is measurement and geometry.
We successfully achieved our most recent C.I. goal in written conventions. Our new goal is for multiplication of multiple numbers. We will work on this daily in class, during enrichment, and small groups to help us achieve our goal.
Help!!! We are running out of supplies……Mrs. Regan’s class could really use some donations of pencils and lined paper. Mrs. Reno’s class is on their last stack of lined paper. We would love donations so that we can use our limited funds to purchase Language Arts games and manipulatives for our groups.

Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
We had another wonderful week in fourth grade, Friday being our 100th day of school. Since it is the 100th day we celebrated by reviewing throughout the day! In math we had our bag of 100 items and we practiced fractions and decimals with our stuff. We also estimated, calculated and divided the cost of a huge bag of skittles! (Congratulations Hannah for guessing the correct amount of skittles!) In Language Arts we went on a grammar conventions hunt having to find 100 of many different types of sentences (commas, quotes, exclamations, and questions to name a few). We also had to find 100 rules of grammar and spelling. WOW, we worked hard today and earned our chocolate milk and cookie! Thank you Mrs. Bruckler for bringing us such a wonderful treat.
In math this week, Mrs. Regan’s class worked on operations with decimals in unit 12. Mrs. Reno’s class is working in unit 13. We both continue working on math facts. During our Enrichment block, all students have been given extra support in all skills and standards that we’ve learned so far in fourth grade. In Language Arts, our attention has been on writing and written conventions. Our Language Arts groups have been focusing on standards within this topic. Next week, we will be assessing our current unit in English, which is mechanics in grammar. In science this week, we learned all about the scientific method, atoms, matter, and other aspects of basic Chemistry. We will conclude our unit on Chemistry next week as well.
If you need hours and can come to class I have a huge bucket of filing that needs to be done at any point of the day.
Have a great weekend,

What a wonderful day at KCRA-3! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive on this trip!
In Language Arts we continued to work on written conventions which as you know is our SMART goal for the year. Students have also been writing many genres each week. This week we really focused on writing response to literature. This is a new type of writing for these students and while we have worked on it all year it still seems tricky for many.
In math Mrs. Regan’s group finished unit 11 and will began unit 12. Mrs. Reno’s group finished unit 12 and will begin unit 13 next week. We also worked on math facts and had two thirty minute blocks of math and science enrichment this week. In math enrichment your child was given a packet that correlated to a unit of study that could enhance their skills.
In science this week we began studying Chemistry. We learned about matter and atoms. We also began an in class experiment that will follow the scientific process.
If you need volunteer hours we have plenty of openings in our Language Arts Centers and our Literature Groups. The times are at 9:45 everyday except Thursday. If you are unable to volunteer in the class please let us know and we will try to work with another department to get you something to do.

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
We had another wonderful week in fourth grade writing, learning and growing! In math, Mrs. Regan’s class practiced changing decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. Both classes practiced finding these points on a number line and Mrs. Reno’s class worked with decimals using different operations. We all continued to practice multiplication, division, and algebra. In Language Arts, we wrote, wrote and wrote some more. Students are becoming masters at editing paragraphs and have visited third grade to edit third grade paragraphs. Our new SMART goal is in Written Conventions, standards 1.4-1.6. In Language Arts groups, students work in differentiated small groups mastering these standards.
Meteorology ended today with our assessment. We had a wonderful time over the last two weeks learning all about our atmosphere and how weather works. Next Friday, we will visit KCRA 3. We have a few more weather reports to finish on Tuesday too. We will also begin our unit on Chemistry and learn all about the Scientific Method. Our classes will conduct whole class experiments to assist in understanding. Over the extended weekend please try to assist your child in coming up with a Science Fair project. I will be asking, on Tuesday, to make sure that everyone has a project or is really close.
On February 11, fourth grade will be visiting the American River Water Education Center at Folsom Dam. We will learn all about water conservation and electricity. This trip is limited to only six adults per class.

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
What a great first week back! We want to send out another huge THANK YOU to all of our families for your generous gifts during the holiday season. We were really touched by your thoughtfulness!
We started off our new year with a fun and exciting unit on Meteorology. On January 21, Friday, we will have a field trip to KCRA 3. A big thank you goes to Marcelino and Teresa for making this possible. The number of chaperones and drivers will not be limited. This trip is also free of charge. Remember to turn in your permission slips by January 14th. Please also remember that your child's weather report is due on the 14th!
In math, Mrs. Regan’s class started a new unit on fractions that will finish up on Friday. Next, we will begin decimals. Mrs. Reno’s class is currently working on decimals and will be having their assessment Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Check out her website links for some great games that work on the skills they are learning in class.
In Language Arts, we started our unit on writing mechanics. Many activities on our Language Arts groups support this unit and our school wide SMART goal. This week, we have written and edited, an expository essay.
As a reminder, next Monday is a minimum day and January 17 there is no school.
Thank you for all you do!

Study for African Kingdoms
It is imperative that your child study for this test so that they can pass it before the break.
They need to know the following:
Three of the physical features of Africa.
Where Ghana is located and how its location helped them prosper.
What was traded - goods and things that you can't see like culture and religion
One of the follopwing people: Sundiata, Sumanguru, Ibn Batutta or Mansa Musa
They need to know what their contribution was to African Kingdoms.

We took our unit 10 fraction test today. Some students are still having difficulty adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Those students will do math page 265-265 set B and C 1-9 odds. I worked with these students for 30 minutes today and I can see that they are catching onto the concept.
Adjective assessment is going home today! If your child scored below 80% we worked on the area in class today and in some cases they were reassessed today. A few students need to do some practice in the book. Those students know who they are as well as the page (I made sure it was written in their planners)
Social Studies test - our African Kingdoms test will be Thursday. Please help me by studying with your child tonight and tomorrow. It is imperative that everyone pass this test as it will be difficult for your child to come back in January and retest the unit. Your student needs to know the following for the test:
- At least three physical features of Africa (must be able to explain the features too)
- The location of Ghana (being on the trade route)
- What goods and cultural items passed along the Trans Sahara Trade Route
- They must also be able to explain in great detail one of the following people's contributions: Ibn Bautta, Mansa Musa, Sonhai, or Sundiata. (They wrote information on their person today on 3x5 cards)

1. How does Mali decline? (explain)
2. What is the century of Musa?
3. Why did Mansa Musa take the two Songhai princes under his protection?

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
This week we continued practicing our CI goal, metaphors. It has been fun making up metaphors and distinguishing them from similes. We also continued writing narratives, and summarizing our new literature group books. In Language Arts, our we finished our unit on adjectives. We will spend next week reviewing adjectives as well as other concepts that we have learned this year.
In math, as you know, we have worked on fractions this week. A good majority of the students passed the fractions test however not all the tests have been graded. I will continue working with any student who scores below 80% and retest them on the concepts on Thursday.
In math we did begin learning to add fractions with unlike denominators. Our previous unit really helped us catch on quickly to this skill. We will be taking our unit 10 assessment in math around Tuesday or Wednesday. The remainder of next week will be spent focusing on reviewing skills we have already learned in math.
African Kingdoms is our current Social Studies unit. This unit will be assessed by Thursday. Please refer to the study guide and the book, “What Every Fourth Grader Needs to Know”. Today we learned about Sundiata and Sumanguru. See if your child remembers why Sundiata was such a great leader and why Sumanguru was so mean.
Next week we will not have new spelling or vocabulary units. Monday and Friday are both minimum days. Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you,

Just go to the main page with our picture and at the bottom click on classes which will take you to a page that has all the posted homework.
This week we finished up our study of the Middle Ages. Next week we will have fun scavenger hunt of all the famous Middle Age heroes. We will begin our study of Islam after Thanksgiving. In Language Arts, we continued our study of verbs and practiced writing summaries. Next week will be our verb assessment. In math we are working on Geometry and will be having our Unit 8 Geometry test next Thursday. Please continue to practice math facts at home.
Remember our Middle Age Feast is next Friday. This feast is the “big” fourth grade event in the classrooms. It will take many parent volunteers to make this a fun and successful event. The feast is a highlight for the students. Thank you to our room parents for all their hard work.
Have a wonderful four day weekend!

Another great week in fourth grade!
This week we continued working on division, factoring and prime and composite numbers. We continue to review algebraic equations and multi digit multiplication daily as these skills are still tricky and need to be practiced daily. In Language Arts we continued learning about verbs. We anticipate finishing this unit the week of conferences. In preparation for the state writing test we wrote a response to literature and an expository essay. We will continue writing all the different genres several times a week. In social studies we completed our second unit assessment on the Middle Ages. Next Wednesday will be our final assessment for this fabulous unit. Friday the 19th will be our grand Middle Ages feast. The students are encouraged to dress up for the feast. More details to come.
Next week we will not have any spelling or vocabulary homework. Due to the shortened week, and minimum days the following week we will not be having reading groups or language arts groups. We will resume our groups the week after Thanksgiving. Thank you to all the parents who come each week and help us. Enjoy your two weeks off!

Greetings Fabulous Families!
This week has been really busy in fourth grade. The students have learned double digit division, practicing double digit multiplication and order of operations. The next math unit will be geometry and will begin late next week to early the following one. In Language Arts we focused on learning about verbs and working on writing response to literature. We also continued to practice summaries as many students wrote a summary about caves during enrichment. In Social Studies we continued learning about life in the middle ages. This week has been especially interesting as we learned what life was like in a castle, the job of being a knight, and what life was life for the serfs. There have been many long detailed conversations about the differences between our lives and a person in the middle ages. We hope that many of the students have a better appreciation for all the comforts we have now. Next week we will continue learning more about the middle ages and will take our second assessment around Wednesday.
Thank you to the wonderful parents who brought us a spectacular party! The treats were delicious and the craft was a huge hit!
We hope you have a wonderful safe weekend! Enjoy trick or treating with your child!

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
This week in fourth grade we finished our unit on double digit multiplication. Next week, we will start our unit on division. Please work with your child on multiplication facts at home because this skill is the key to success in the upcoming units. In Language Arts, we continued reviewing nouns and sentence structure and writing conventions. Students worked on Response to Literature and will continue working on all four types of writing in the weeks to come. In Social Studies, we took our first assessment on Middle Ages. This unit is our largest in Social Studies and will be broken up into three assessments. Thank you to all the parents who come and help out in our Literature and Language Arts centers. If you would like to volunteer for these small groups, we could use more parent assistance. Have a great weekend and we will see you all at the Harvest Carnival. Remember that Monday is a minimum day and school dismisses at noon.

This week in fourth grade we learned double digit multiplication. We have been practicing this skill over and over as and we can see that this concept is getting easier each time. In Language Arts we continued reviewing nouns as possessive nouns are still a little tricky. This week in writing we began responding to literature in short paragraphs and wrote an expository essay on our favorite activities. We are going to begin focusing our writing on the five paragraph essay starting next week. In social studies we continued learning about the Middle Ages. Next week we will have an assessment on the first seven chapters of Middle Ages and double digit multiplication.
We are noticing that more students are forgetting their homework. We have gone from just two to many. Please help us by checking your emails daily for the list of homework and then checking to ensure that it5 is done. Late homework results in Study Hall on Fridays.

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
We had another wonderful week with our students. We started our largest Social Studies unit on the Middle Ages. Please refer to “What Your Child Needs to Know” book to review the materials with your child. Next week, we will start a new English unit on Verbs. This unit includes past, present and future tense of verbs, subject-verb agreement, the special verb “be”, and contractions. We will continue working on summaries and response to literature in writing. In Literature Groups, students are focusing on the literary element of character traits. Ask your child to describe traits of the characters in their book. For math, please continue to practice math facts at home with your student every day. This really helps when learning how to multiply multiple digits. Please remember that our music teacher, Mrs. George has requested either a recorder sent from home or $3.00 to purchase a new recorder for your child. We need this asap. Monday is a minimum day and school is out at 12:00. Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you,
Mrs. Regan and Mrs. Reno

Dear Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
This week in Science, we coompleted studying about rocks, soil, and minerals. In Language Arts, we continued to practice sentence structure, mechanics and nouns. In writing, we wrote wonderful summaries and began to practice writing a response to literature. Students completed math unit 4 and will begin unit 5 on Monday, which is all about Algebra and Functions. Next week, we will continue with Response to Literature and Summaries. On Friday, we will take our Noun Unit Assessment. Students are excited to start our Middle Ages unit next week. This unit will continue through the month of October. Our wonderful music teacher, Mrs. George, has placed a request for $3.00 cash per child to purchase a recorder for your child, or to send in a recorder from home by 10/5. If you send in a recorder from home, please place it in a baggie, labeled with your child's name.

Dear Parents,
Monday is a mini day 12:00 dismissal.
This week in fourth grade we completed unit three in math. We are continuing on with multi-digit multiplication in unit four. Please help us by practicing multiplication facts at home for five minutes a day. Next week we will have fun learning all about rocks and soil. In Language Arts next week we will continue learning about nouns and summaries.
In music, Mrs. George will be teaching the recorder. If you already have a recorder please label it, put it in a Ziploc baggie and send it into class by 10-1-10. If you would like to purchase one the cost will be $3.00 cash.
Next week is our first field trip. Please make sure to pack a sack lunch and lots of water. It would also be wise to put sunscreen on your child that morning and have them wear tennis shoes. We expect to return to the school between 3:30 and 4:00 and will have parents start calling other parents when we leave.

Hello Fabulous Families:
This week in fourth grade we continued learning about multiplication and started reviewing division. We will have our unit 3 test in math next Thursday. In Language Arts we began learning about nouns and continued practicing writing summaries. In Science we explored the San Andreas Fault, earthquakes, and erosion. We will be having a Science test on these concepts late next week. To help your child you can review the information on page 269-280 (minus the rock and soil information).
Our first field trip to Coloma is on Tuesday September 28th. Please make sure that your permission slip is to us by Tuesday the 21st. We understand that this field trip is a lot of money so please let us know if you need financial assistance as PSP does have a special fund for this. Please remember this field trip is non refundable so unfortunately if your child gets sick and cannot attend we will not be able to get a refund.
Field trip drivers for Mrs. Reno's Class are:
Aragon, Bauer, Bruckler, Klang, Mandeville, Parenti, Nolan and Woodford
(Please let me know if you are unable to make the trip so I can get another driver. )
A big thank you to all the families that volunteered to drive on this trip. This is the one trip that we talked about where we are limited to a certain amount of parents. At this point I have all the parents that I can take.

Dear fabulous fourth grade families,
We had another wonderful week with your students! In math, we continued to work on number sense by rounding numbers, estimating and solving word problems. Next week, we will practice adding and subtracting whole numbers. We will have our assessment on Friday. Please practice subtraction, addition, multiplication and division math facts at home. In Language Arts, we wrote a beautiful expository essay this week about our mountains. We also practiced our IVF topic sentences and learned the structure of a summary. Our first English unit will conclude the middle of next week. We have been working hard on identifying and correcting run-on sentences, simple subject and simple predicates. In Literature Groups, we continued to identify the setting and practice writing IVF topic sentences. In Social Studies, students learned what the five tallest peaks in the world are. They also can identify and name the seven largest mountain ranges. Please review mountains and ranges with your child to prepare them for the assessment. Students will be given a map and will need to name and place the mountains and ranges. Please remember that PE is every Wednesday and Friday. Send your student with tennis shoes on these days. We hope you have a wonderful three day weekend!
