Math: Use the reteaching page in the workbook for lesson 5-6 as a refernce and spelling to complete the math activity.
Your child is to label, cut, and then glue the triangles onto a separte sheet of paper. They need to figure out the best way to sort the triangles. For example, they might want to put all of the acute triangles in a group, all right triangles in a group, etc. '

Word Study Wednesday.
CI update:
We began our CI goal with a 23 % proficient. We just assessed the kids and we are at 89% proficient. We will continue to work with those students who did not pass during Enrichment Block. We will update you as we progress toward 100% proficient!
Our new CI Goal is by October 25, 2010 100% of third graders will score proficient on understanding, writing, and spelling the 26 most common contractions.

Today we learned:
Math: subtracting four digits numbers with regrouping
LA: We are going to begin our second narrative story next week. We are currently working on an informative paragraph about MR.FAB.
Science: We took our test and we will begin Rome next week.
Music: We had an amazing presention of all different instruments in class. Thank you to our music docents, musicians, and parent volunteers. The kids loved it!

Current CI Goal: By October 11, 100% of Third Graders will be proficient in editing a paragraph for beginning capitalization and ending punctuation.
Beginning Proficiency: 13%
Activities: We will be working on this goal in class through group and independent editing of progressively larger paragraphs (First, 2 sentences, then three, etc).
How can you help: Whenever your child is writing sentences at home (homework, letters to Grandma, etc) encourage them to read their writing outloud and listen for missing punctuation. Have them drag their finger from punctuation to the next letter to check for capitalization.

Math: Making and choosing answers that are reasonable.
LA: We are almost done with our first narrative! They will be posted in our room for all to read.
Grammar: We will continue with possessive pronouns and then take a short quiz before we begin our unit on adjectives.
Science: We learned about inherit traits of reptiles.
Computer Lab: We will continue our hunt on the three tyes of mammals.
Music :Students became Boomwhacker musicians playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, pointing to the treble clef, staff, music notes, and time signature in the music. They were composers and named the notes to clap the beginning rhythm to the Star Wars Theme. We named the instruments in the strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion orchestra families. Topics discussed are on pages 184-188 and 190-194 of What Every 3rd Grader Needs to Know.
Homework: Math is a prep test worksheet and facts--Please check this with your child. Our test is tomorrow.

I will be asbent tomorrow due to taking my 16 year old to UC Irvine. I will be drving home on Sunday, therefore I will not respond to any emails or notes until the end of day on Monday.

1. Math: we reviewed how to add two digit numbers and learned how to estimate each addend.
Reading: We started new novels! We are moving right along in reading groups.
Science: Finished our mammal project and book.
LA: We are currently working on our first narrative. I would love an editor to help me in class. If you love to write and feel comfortable editing kiddos, please let me know. The times change, but I can try and make it work with your schedule.

Math: Practice 3-5 --Please be sure your child is reading the directions about estimating. I had many students who needed to use class time today to redo homework corrections.

Today we:
1. Compared large numbers in math. Please assist your child when he/she comes home with math correction. Please sign the note and let me know if it was a simple error or if your child needs further assistance.
2. Grammar: We played a game and worked with subjects and complete predicates.
3. Social Studies: We learned the rivers in Europe. Please use the attached power points to help your child. I will try to send the videos as well. If they do not come through, use youtube for help.
4. Writing: We are working on mastering how to plan and write an expository paragraph.

Read 20 mins and log...logs are due every Friday with all four days complete. Please check your child's log to ensure neatness, completion, and that it it the your child's best work.
Math: 1-4 Enrichment...it is a separate sheet in the folder. If it is too difficult, have your child complete 1-4 practice in the book.

- Math Worksheet( parents please sign to let me know you checked it with your child) and one sheet of facts
- Conversation Guide: Use the River guide as a tool of communication. This is everything from our whole unit...so your child will not know it all now:) It will help for the assessment at the end of the unit.
- Please sign planner nightly
Note: You may time your child nightly if you would like, but know by Wednesday, you want your child to finish the facts in five minutes.

-We got our new reading books for reading groups!
Tonight for homework, your child needs to complete the following.
Math: Practice 1-1 and practice 1-2. Please only return the two pages tomorrow, not the book.
Also, we began facts this week. Please read the cover letter and time your child for five minutes. Please sign and return that you have read and understand how we do facts each week.
Keep the facts at home until Thursday. Send the entire packet back to school on Thursday with your signature.
Reading: Read for twenty minutes and write a summary of what was read on the reading log. Again, this is based on the honors system. Please return the log on Thursday with your signature.
Tomorrow your child will bring home a Conversation Guide for our rivers unit.
